PACKING TIPS

What should you pack when you go on holiday in Uganda? It is not so easy to know for those of you who have not been on a trip to Africa before. Here are some useful tips as the journey approaches:

Firstly - pack light! The luggage may have to go up on the roof of the bus, and down again when we get to the next accommodation. In some places, it may be a long walk from the parking lot to where you will sleep. Then it is good not to have too heavy luggage. It's a good idea to have a small bag that you can have as hand luggage when we travel by bus.

Secondly, remember that you may be doing a bit of shopping and need space in your luggage for coffee, tea, dried fruit, nuts, souvenirs or other things on the way home.

Thirdly, it may be good to know that most accommodation facilities offer to wash clothes at a very reasonable price. The laundry is done by hand, and for that reason the employees do not wash underwear, so you either have to have enough of it, or wash it yourself. Hand washing detergent is easily available, so there is no need to bring it from Norway.

  • Ordinary light summer clothes

  • Swimwear

  • Good shoes and sandals

  • At least one pair of trousers, a jumper and a jacket. It can get cold in the evenings and mornings.

  • Common toiletries

  • Sun cream

  • Sunglasses

  • Mosquito spray

  • Malaria drugs

  • Any other medicines you need

  • Camera and/or binoculars

  • Power adapter

And then of course there are many things that can be nice to have with you, such as headphones, extra memory cards, travel pillow, flashlight/headlight, antibac or wet wipes, reading material...

Finally: remember your passport, proof of yellow fever vaccination, and Visa card. Master Card can be used in some places, but not everywhere. So we recommend bringing at least one visa card. You can also bring US dollars and exchange on the first day in Uganda. In some of the places we are going you can pay in dollars, but in most places you need Ugandan shillings when shopping.
